| SKATER - OUR APPROACH |
| |
At Cutting Edge, we take a very basic but rigorous approach to ice hockey training in all of our programs, including small group training, one-on-one, clinics and camps. |
| |
| SKATING SKILL SET |
|
Skating is the most important part of the game and we will help you to improve by mastering the fundamentals. We work with the student to develop a stronger and more efficient stride, increase foot speed and lateral movement, and learn how to accelerate in an instant and stop on a dime. An important element of this training involves use of our state-of-the-art SETS Multisport training machines.
Improving technique, increasing strength, and developing balance will substantially improve your skating and help provide the confidence to master the other aspects of hockey.
|
| |
| SHOOTING AND SCORING |
| |
Learn how to put the puck in the back of the net. All aspects of scoring will be taught, including fakes, dekes, deflections and more. We will teach you not only the different shots, but also how and when to use them. |
| |
| STICKHANDLING |
| |
Learn how to handle the puck in traffic or on the fly. We'll teach you the different
moves and fakes that will improve your game and increase your creativity on the ice. |
| |
| GOALTENDING |
| |
At Cutting Edge Ice Academy we take a different approach to goaltending. We cover all sides of the puck, every aspect of goaltending, including the shooter's perspective. We build a better goaltender by concentrating on improving each individual student's particular style and strengths. |
| |
| MOTIVATION AND CONDITIONING |
| |
Physical conditioning is a key element of ice hockey. Improved conditioning will provide the ability and confidence to take your game to the next level. At Cutting Edge Ice Academy we provide age-appropriate instruction for each individual student, which in most cases will include plyometrics (dryland) and on-ice training with the SETS Multisport. It is definitely hard work but the results are worth the effort. |
| |
| GAME SITUATIONS |
| |
We pride ourselves in teaching our students how to apply the skills they have learned in realistic game situations. Learning how to read and react on the ice gives our players the advantage because they develop the ability to anticipate plays and react accordingly. |
| |
|
| SKATER - SMALL GROUP TRAINING |
| |
Small Group Training (SGT) sessions are conducted with 3-5 players and one coach. They provide a cost effective way for your son or daughter to receive a high level of individual attention to their game and maximize their rate of skill development. Small Group Training is a proven way to succeed.
Compared to a typical one-on-one session, the SGT format allows for some (relatively short) recovery time between drills. This is important because it allows the drills to be conducted in a manner that is very similar to the high intensity, on-and-off nature of ice hockey games. Our intention is to maintain the same high intensity throughout the session, to maximize both the rate of skill development and conditioning, while providing appropriate (and flexible) rest periods as required.
The multiple player format allows us to conduct more realistic and competitive game situation drills, such as 1-on-1, 2-on-1, tip-ins and rebound drills. It also provides the students with an opportunity to observe and test themselves against other players, learn from them, and build camaraderie. This can be a significant advantage because it helps provide the motivation that the students need to take their game to the next level.
Our Cutting Edge coaches will pair your son or daughter with other skaters of similar ability, or you can bring them in with some friends. The sessions may be taken as a single lesson, or in packages of 6, 12, 24, or 48 lessons.

| SKATER - ONE-ON-ONE TRAINING |
| |
One-on-one hockey lessons are an excellent way to improve and fine tune existing skills, learn new skills, and address specific deficiencies in a hockey player's game. Instructors can focus on individual skills such as shooting, puck handling, or edge work, and identify other specific areas for improvement. In a one-on-one training environment, instructors are able to establish a rapport with the player, creating a great environment for learning and developing additional confidence on the ice.
One-on-one sessions may be taken as a single lesson, or in packages of 6, 12, 24, or 48 lessons. To find out more about the benefits of our One-on-One training call us at 201-773-6647 to speak to one of our Senior Coaches. To check availability, you can call or refer to the “Schedule” section of our web site.
Note regarding cancellation: Due to the need to schedule coaches prior to the one-on-one sessions, we ask that all cancellations or changes in schedule be made at least one day in advance. If any cancellations are made the day of the lesson, or if the student is a no-show, we will need to bill for the price of the lesson or take one lesson off any existing package. |

| SKATER - SHOOTING PROGRAM |
| |
Shooting is taught as an integral part of many of our programs, including our Individual and Small Group Training. But for those who need or desire more focused work, we also offer specialized Shooting Clinics using our “Thunder Alley” shooting and goaltenders rink.
The Cutting Edge Shooting Clinics are offered in groups of six sessions each, designed to take the shooter through all of the important shot types (wrist shot, backhand, snap shot, slap shot, breakaway), empathizing on the science and technique of each one. Because all of the teaching is on ice, we are able to teach both static shooting (to master the fundamentals), as well as shooting
on-the-fly to put the teachings into realistic practice.
Once the basics of each shot are covered, generally in the first 3 of the 6 sessions, we move on teach the higher level skills of shot selection and timing based on real game situations, and how to exploit goalie weaknesses (shooting to score).
The following provides a more detailed summary of the curriculum:
Science and Fundamentals of Shooting:
• Before shot: Proper knee bend, stick placement, feet placement, puck placement
on the stick, leg loading, and grip.
• Beginning shot: Completion of leg loading, weight transfer/leg drive
• During shot: Arm/shoulder rotation, stick flexing, wrist roll
• After shot: Proper position on ice, rebound attack
Shooting Awareness:
• Shooting to score, exploiting goalie weaknesses, shot selection (based on situations), where to shoot, when to shoot & why, shot timing, and rebounds
This combined program is unlike anything offered in conventional training programs, and is virtually guaranteed to step-change improvement in a shooter’s skills.
Separate clinics are offered for different age groups: Mite/Squirt, Peewee/Bantam and Midget/Junior.
To find out more about our six-week Shooting Clinics call us at 201-773-6647 to speak to one of our Senior Coaches. To check availability, you can call or refer to the Scheduling section of this web site, and College/Elite Level.

| SKATER - CLINICS |
| |
Each Cutting Edge Ice Academy Hockey Clinic consists of a full session of skill specific training with some of the top trainers and coaches in the world. These hockey clinics are far more in-depth than other hockey clinics you may have seen, and will teach you the kind of skills that you won’t learn at regular hockey clinics. With our specially designed clinics at Cutting Edge, we take the hockey clinic experience to the next level.
|
| BASIC SKILLS |
|
The goal of this clinic is to develop and enhance the four basic skills of ice hockey – skating, stickhandling, shooting and passing - during an hour-long ice session. Our drills will focus on developing multiple skill sets at once (i.e. skating and stick handling). These are great clinics for beginners as well as players looking for a tune-up.
|
| CHECKING CLINIC (School of Hard Knocks) |
|
Learn how to check with proper techniques for shoulder, hip and stick checks. Learn the basic and advanced techniques of angling an opponent. The clinic will finish with high intensity battle drills focusing on loose pucks, board work and one-on-ones.
|
| |
| POWER SKATING |
| |
Our Senior Coaches apply the proven methods of the world’s leading skating instructors to improve fundamentals of skating stride, edge work and overall skating technique. The key in this clinic is an attention to detail, and a focus on each individual skater. |
| |
| SPEED CLINIC |
| |
Over-speed power skating techniques combined with a fast pace will ensure a fun but challenging workout for players. Players will be taught about on-ice awareness as well to keep their hockey sense sharp. |
| |

| |
Work on the fundamentals of passing including straight passes, touch passes, saucer passes, indirect passes and more. Drills will be fast-paced and challenging to simulate real game situations. As always, proper skating technique will be emphasized. |
| |
| SHOOTING AND SCORING (SNIPER TRAINING) |
| |
To be an effective scorer, players need to learn where to be (and when to be there). Learn proper techniques of wrist, snap, slap and backhand shots. Focus points will be weight transfer, accuracy, quickness, scoring off the rush, breakaways, one-timers and tip-ins. |
| |
| POSITIONAL CLINIC (OFFENSIVE/DEFENSIVE ZONE POSITIONING) |
