In today’s fast-paced game, goaltenders are more technically sound than ever.

To consistently beat them, teams need to create scoring chances that pull the goalie out of position. One of the most effective ways to do this is by using the Royal Road.

What is the Royal Road?

The Royal Road is an imaginary line that runs vertically through the middle of the offensive zone, splitting the ice in half from the net outward. Crossing this line with the puck—either by pass or carry—forces the goaltender to move laterally. This movement dramatically increases the chance of scoring because goalies are far less effective when sliding across than when squaring up to a shot.

Why It Works

  1. Forces Goalie MovementGoaltenders are most comfortable when set, square, and stationary. A Royal Road pass makes them move side-to-side, opening holes and limiting their reaction time.

  2. Creates High-Danger ChancesShots following a Royal Road pass are some of the highest percentage scoring opportunities in hockey. The puck is often moving east-west while the goalie is scrambling to adjust.

  3. Neutralizes PositioningEven the best goalies can’t cover both sides of the net at once. When the puck crosses the Royal Road, it often leaves them guessing and exposes weak spots.

  4. Stretches DefensesDefenders must respect both sides of the ice, which opens lanes for plays like the backdoor tap-in or the one-timer from the slot.

How to Use the Royal Road to Score More Goals

  1. Attack with PatienceInstead of firing a low-percentage shot from the outside, look to move the puck across the Royal Road. A simple extra pass can turn a routine save into a grade-A chance.

  2. Utilize Cross-Ice PassingWingers should be ready to slide pucks through seams to the weak side. Defensemen at the point can also exploit the Royal Road by moving laterally and then feeding across.

  3. Set Up One-TimersThe most lethal scoring plays happen when a cross-ice pass is followed by a quick one-timer. This prevents the goalie from getting across and resetting.

  4. Use DeceptionLook-off passes, fake shots, and drop passes keep defenders guessing. Deception increases the likelihood of successfully moving the puck across the line.

  5. Crash the BackdoorForwards should drive hard to the weak-side post. Backdoor tap-ins are one of the purest examples of Royal Road offense.

Drills to Practice the Royal Road

  • Cross-Ice 2-on-1s: Create scenarios where the puck carrier must decide between shooting or threading a pass across the line.

  • Seam Pass Shooting Drills: Practice quick-release one-timers after cross-ice passes.

  • Royal Road Awareness Games: Use small area games that reward teams for goals scored off Royal Road passes.

Final Thoughts

Scoring in hockey isn’t about just shooting harder—it’s about creating smarter chances. The Royal Road is the key to unlocking more high-danger scoring opportunities. By moving the puck east-to-west and forcing the goalie to adjust, you give your team the best possible chance to light the lamp.

Next time you’re in the offensive zone, remember: cross the line, and you’ll cross up the goalie.
